FARMAX is a decision support tool for pastoral farmers.

The intellectual property behind FARMAX was developed by AgResearch and was born out of 20 years of research.

It is an evidence‐based system developed for the industry, by the industry.

Commercially launched in 1993, The FARMAX Engine® is driven by a series of algorithms (calculations) which can accurately model the complex biological system that is pastoral farming.

This technology allows farmers and consultants to create accurate models of farming systems and then test different scenarios to forecast the impact of different short, medium or long‐term decisions on their production and profitability.

This helps them make informed decisions regarding the best use of their land to meet their farming objectives and, for example, to set or change things such as stock policies and numbers through to land‐use and farm conversions.

Having created a model of the farming operation, it can be converted into a plan or budget for the  season ahead and by recording monthly farm data, comparisons can be made of actual to budget.

A key strength of the FARMAX system is the ability to constantly re‐forecast likely outcomes given the actual data entered. This enables more proactive decision making by farmers.

FARMAX analysis shows sheep and beef farmers using FARMAX have performed 78% better than the industry average over the past decade.

North Island Hill Country farmers, who have been strong adopters of the tool since its inception, have averaged gross margin increases of 157% over the same period.

The FARMAX team maintains a series of benchmarking files that allow FARMAX farmers to compare their farm’s performance against others in similar geographic regions or of similar sizes.

Thousands of New Zealand pastoral farms have been modelled utilising FARMAX. With that data combined with analysis, FARMAX has at its fingertips a range of current and historic industry information from pasture growth rates to production and profitability performance across regions, farm system and size, and years.

FARMAX head office is located at Waikato Innovation Park, Hamilton.
